How is a custom-made shirt created?

Tailoring a custom shirt begins with a precise understanding of the silhouette. When placing an order, we collect over 20 measurements, taking into account factors such as shoulder slope, spine alignment, arm positioning, neck structure, muscle build, and stomach type.

Based on this information, we adjust the structural allowances according to the client's fitting preferences. Subsequently, we create an individual template to tailor the shirt so that it drapes well on the silhouette and ensures comfortable wear.

Selecting the fabric and finishing details for a made-to-measure shirt

Selecting the fabric for a custom-made shirt is one of the most important stages of the whole process. At VAN THORN, we work with several thousand fabrics from the best brands, including Thomas Mason and Cotonificio Albini, so during the meeting, we help select the material suitable not only in terms of color and pattern but also shade, smoothness, structure, weave, transparency, breathability, lightness, density, shine, touch, and ease of ironing.

We also advise on choosing the collar according to the face shape, how to wear the shirt, and whether it is intended for bow tie, necktie, or casual wear. We can also adjust the stiffness of the collar stays, the type of buttons, such as mother-of-pearl or corozo, and even a monogram. This way, the shirt is consistent not only with the silhouette but also with the purpose and personal preferences.

How does the process of tailoring a custom shirt look like

The process of ordering a custom shirt starts with a meeting at the salon. The visit lasts about an hour, so it's worth scheduling a convenient time in advance. During this time, we discuss the client's needs, choose the fabric, and determine shirt elements such as the collar, cuffs, placket, buttons, or monogram. Then we take measurements, receive a 50% deposit of the order value, and begin sewing the shirt. After about 3-4 weeks, we invite you for a fitting. We then check how the shirt fits on the body, also in motion and while sitting. If everything is fine, the shirt is ready for pick-up, and the remaining part of the order value is settled upon collection. If adjustments are needed, we usually make them within a few days, and pick-up occurs after they are done.

Tailored shirts for work, weddings, and everyday wear

A made-to-measure shirt can be tailored for both everyday work and weddings, evening events, or less formal occasions. Depending on its purpose, we help choose the right fabric, color, collar, and finishing to ensure the shirt complements a suit, tuxedo, blazer, or a more casual outfit.

We tailor various types of made-to-measure shirts, including business, wedding, and tuxedo shirts, as well as models with a less formal character, such as oxford button-down shirts (OCBD) or linen shirts. This way, the shirt can be customized not only to fit the silhouette but also to match the occasion, dress code, and individual dressing style.
